Feng Shui

Did you know that feng shui is a deep science that has been around for milleniums?
Many people think that feng shui is magic.  Some have even thought it was voodoo.  The true definition of feng shui is:  The science of how people connect with their living space whether it be work, play, sleep or family interaction and how that space supports their life intentions.

"What does that mean?" you ask.  For example:  Does your space nurture your intentions?  Are you seeking to slow down, to get more focused on less stressful activities?  Would you like to make a career transition or maybe regroup and find a new intimate relationship after your divorce?

If you are looking for less stress, what can you do with your space to change your physical environment to support that goal?  Maybe it is bringing less work home in the evenings, or clearing clutter to free up space thereby making the room feel more spacious.  Doing this also will free up the clutter in your mind and help you focus on fun things in life and breathe in freedom.  Feng shui is  a metaphor for living and what you surround yourself with in terms of furniture, clutter and office work can also clutter your mind.

What if you are looking for a new intimate relationship?  Is every drawer in your wardrobe stuffed with clothes and your stuff?  Does your closet look like a bomb went off in it?  Is there room for anyone else's belongings?  Remember, feng shui is a metaphor for our lives.  If there is no room in your physical space, there may also not be room for another in you mind body and spirit.  So clean a drawer or two.  Thin out the closet and push those clothes over to make room for a new relationship.  State your intentions and let the Universe take over.

Feng Shui Fixes for Cluttered Minds and Final Exams

 Daughter to Mom

“Woe is me! I have to write an article for the college newspaper and a research paper for my marketing class is due tomorrow. My mind feels cluttered with everything that has been going on this week. Everybody wants my attention. The dog is waiting for his walk, the cat is screaming to be fed, and the phone keeps ringing off the  hook! I can’t find the top of my desk, and somewhere under all of these reference books and rough drafts is my computer.  Help!  What can I do to get my creativity back?!

Connie, the feng shui mom answers:  “So you want to brainstorm with “Mom” to free up your writer’s block?”  It was easy for me to determine what the real problem was with her writer’s block. She shared an apartment with another student. Both she and her roommate had busy schedules and neither had time to stay on top of the clutter accumulating around them. Finals were fast approaching and the stress was beginning to stifle any creativity my daughter needed to write her article for the newspaper and to complete her marketing paper.

So, I rolled up my sleeves, leaned back in my chair, propped my feet on the desk and gave out age-old advice that all mothers are great at giving: “Clean your room!” Of course, my daughter didn’t like that advice. I asked her to imagine that her workspace was instead her mind; then describe the image she  saw there on her desk.

As she began, she slowly came to realize  that she was indeed describing her mind and saw why she was experiencing a writer’s block. Her exact words were, “My mind is all cluttered, that’s why I’m stuck!” “So what do I do mom?”,  was her answer.  Clear the physical clutter from your space and the mind will clear up as well, says Mom feng shui practitioner. Later that week, she called me to report that after our mother-daughter talk she was able to complete both projects on time and that the article for the newspaper was one of the best she had ever written.

Feng shui is about “the science of person-place connection.”  The places and the space within the places in which we live, work, play and relax are always communicating with us.  In fact, our physical environment mirrors what is going on in our current day lives.  When we adjust appropriately our space so that it nurtures our goals, then our lives take on a new dimension and our goals get accomplished.  Feng Shui is a metaphor for living and my daughter learned two new things that evening:

1. That connecting with her immediate environment, in whatever condition, is mirrored also in her mind and therefore affects her outcomes. The moral of the story…to keep your mind uncluttered, you must keep your surroundings uncluttered. And…

2.  That Mom is a person of great wisdom!

The next time you are having a problem focusing, clear out some clutter. Free up some space. That in turn will allow new energy to enter your realm and thus making room for creativity!
